Short nativity plays: our top 10, from just 8 minutes

Updated 2 November 2026 · by Stuart Ross

Short on time this Christmas? The quickest nativity plays to rehearse and perform are Christmas Play in ONE Day (from 8 minutes, rehearsed in a single day), Our First Nativity and Our First Nativity TWO (from 10 minutes, for ages 2–5) and Happy Birthday Jesus (about 15 minutes). Below are all ten of our shortest shows, with running times, rehearsal times, ages and cast sizes side by side.

It’s November. The calendar is full, the hall is booked for one afternoon, someone has already asked “are we doing a nativity this year?”, and you’ve got about a fortnight. Sound familiar?

You’re in good company. I’ve been writing nativity plays for children since 2000, and every one of the shows below was written with that exact fortnight in mind: songs children pick up quickly, scripts you can cut or stretch, and nothing that needs a week of painting scenery.

Every title is a Digital Publication, so it’s on your screen the moment you order: editable scripts, vocal and backing tracks, sheet music, PowerPoint scenery and words, staging advice, and a year’s licence to perform it as often as you like.

The simplest nativity plays to stage

The simplest nativity plays to stage are Our First Nativity (it can be narrated, with the children only singing), The ABC Nativity (every part’s line count is listed) and Christmas Play in ONE Day (learned and performed in a single day). All three need no painted scenery, because PowerPoint scenery is included.

What makes a nativity simple to stage:

  • Songs on familiar tunes, so children learn them in days, not weeks.
  • A narrated script option, so non-readers and shy children can still take part.
  • Flexible cast sizes, so you aren’t rewriting when numbers change.
  • Projected scenery and on-screen words, so there’s no painting and no song sheets to chase.

Short to perform, or quick to rehearse?

They’re not always the same thing. Some shows are short on the day but need a few run-throughs; others are built so a whole cast can learn them fast. That’s why I’ve given you both figures. And almost every show stretches or shrinks: drop a song, cut a scene or use the simpler script, and it fits your afternoon.

The top 10

1. Christmas Play in ONE Day · ages 5–11

Christmas Play in ONE Day – cover

The one for when you’ve genuinely run out of time. It’s designed to be learned and performed in a single day. Santa visits a children’s hospital ward in a warm, funny story that can run from just 8 minutes up to 30, with six songs and room for anything from 17 to over 200 children. There’s an optional nativity scene if you’d like one.

“The songs are really good and the script suited our needs perfectly!”

Mrs Harris

2. Our First Nativity · ages 2–5

Our First Nativity – cover

Our best seller, and the one preschools come back to year after year. Three scripts mean it works with a handful of narrators or with dozens of tiny parts. Eight songs, including Away In A Manger, and now with lyric videos so little ones can sing along from the screen.

“Pitched perfectly… just divine… Ten out of ten for the best early years nativity we’ve ever used!”

M Tayler

3. Our First Nativity TWO · ages 2–5

Our First Nativity TWO – cover

Did Our First Nativity last year? This is your next one. Eight nursery-rhyme-style songs on tunes children already know, two rhyming scripts, and as little as two days’ rehearsal. New for 2026: lyric videos for every song.

“The script is simply the best we’ve ever come across from any nativity company. The whole package is practically flawless in every way.”

V. Jones

4. Happy Birthday Jesus · ages 2–7

“An absolute treat! The parents loved it. We had so much positive feedback!”

J. Woodall

5. The ABC Nativity · ages 3–7

The ABC Nativity – cover

A rhyming nativity that works its way through the alphabet. Every part’s line count is spelled out, so casting takes minutes, not an evening. There’s a play script for older children and a narrated version for younger ones.

“A great success. Simple to learn, easy to stage… a hassle-free production and all staff still have hair and sanity intact!”

A. Barber

6. C.H.R.I.S.T.M.A.S Spells Christmas (Infants) · ages 3–7

C.H.R.I.S.T.M.A.S Spells Christmas (Infants) – cover

One of our all-time best sellers, performed all over the world. Each letter of C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S opens a new scene of the traditional story, which makes it beautifully easy for young children to follow and remember.

“The songs were beautiful and the lines were easy to remember. The audience were enchanted.”

Donna Meehan

What A Star – cover

Leo is a small, shy star who’s handed the biggest job in the sky: guiding the wise men to Bethlehem. It’s a gentle story about believing in yourself, with nine songs based on familiar tunes, and new for 2026, lyric videos.

“The songs and script were perfectly pitched… the performance was fantastic.”

Mrs Craven

8. Big Bad Ben Of Bethlehem · ages 5–11

9. Joining Joseph The Joiner’s Family · ages 5–11

Joining Joseph The Joiner's Family – cover

The Christmas story from Joseph’s side of the family, with catchy songs that borrow from classical favourites such as Peer Gynt and the William Tell Overture. Children love spotting the tunes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the simplest nativity play?

It depends on the age range. For ages 2–5, the simplest nativity play is Our First Nativity or Our First Nativity TWO: the included narrated scripts let children perform just by singing, or moving along to, eight short nursery-rhyme-style songs. For ages 3–7, the simplest nativity play is The ABC Nativity. It’s literally as easy as ABC: incredibly simple to learn and stage. For ages 7–11, the simplest nativity play is Cool Carols. The rhyming narrated script can easily be read out, and the well-known carols can be rehearsed quickly. Want it even simpler? Miss some songs out and divide the rest between classes, so that no class has more than 1 or 2 songs to learn.

What is a short, funny nativity play?

Big Bad Ben Of Bethlehem (15–35 minutes) is our funniest short nativity: the innkeepers’ son is a nightmare until Super-Nanny Gabriel arrives. For under-7s, The Fairytale Land Nativity Show (20–25 minutes) casts the Big Bad Wolf as the innkeeper.

Is there a free nativity play script?

Every Learn2soar title has free script and song samples on its page, so you can let your children help to make the decision before you buy. The full shows are paid, because each one includes far more than a script: vocal and backing tracks, sheet music, PowerPoint scenery and song words, staging advice, a year’s licence to perform and film it, and lyric videos with most titles.

Can I use a free or homemade script instead?

You can, and some groups do. The things a script alone doesn’t give you are the songs (with vocal and backing tracks to learn and perform to), the on-screen words and scenery, and a performance licence for any published songs you add. Add those up and a complete pack is often cheaper and saves days of preparation.

What is the easiest nativity to learn in a hurry?

Christmas Play in ONE Day (ages 5–11, 8–30 minutes, £30) is written to be learned and performed in a single day. Cool Carols can also be pulled together in a day.
