How long should a nativity be?

A nativity play for ages 2–5 works best at 10–25 minutes, for ages 5–7 at 15–30 minutes, and for ages 7–11 at 25–60 minutes. Choose by the youngest children in your cast: little ones lose focus long before older children do. All our shows are very flexible and can easily stretch or shrink by 10–20 minutes, so you can fit the slot you have.

Why the range? A show’s length depends on how many songs you keep, which one of our multiple script variations you use, and how many children have lines. Dropping just one song can save up to 5 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a Reception nativity be?

Around 15–25 minutes. Reception children manage short rhyming lines and several songs, but most will start to fidget after half an hour.

How long does it take to rehearse a nativity play?

Our quickest shows need a single day (Christmas Play in ONE Day, Cool Carols). Most infant shows need 2–3 days of rehearsal, and longer junior musicals around a week or more. Children learn the songs fastest at home and in class with the vocal tracks, before stage rehearsals begin. Our Rehearsal Page service lets children learn the songs in their own time, in the evenings or at weekends.

When should we start rehearsing?

Most schools start learning the songs and the lines 3–4 weeks before the performance, then organise the staging in the last 1–2 weeks. If you’re starting later with little time, choose a show built for quick rehearsals, like Christmas Play in ONE Day, Cool Carols, The ABC Nativity or Christmas Around The World.

Can I make a nativity play shorter?

Yes. All our publications include fully editable scripts at no extra cost. Most titles also include two or three script versions, and you can easily drop songs or scenes to fit your slot.

How many songs should a nativity have?

Our early years shows have 7–10 songs and our infant shows 8–11. For the youngest children, fewer songs sung well is better than more songs half-learned.
